NYFW: A/W2015 Katie Gallagher
With her Fall/Winter 2015 collection, “Navy Eyes," 28-year old designer Katie Gallagher attempts to evoke an intertwining and blurring of the senses in her monochromatic and oversized silhouettes. Gathering her inspiration from the neurological condition synesthesia (in which a person perceives all of their senses as colors), Gallagher’s collection is simplistic yet striking, using only black, fire-engine red, and one charcoal dress. Each model donned a bright red lipstick, complementing the mostly black line-up of pieces. What we liked about this collection was the upscale, trendy look Gallagher achieved, while still staying true to her alternative style. This style was mirrored by the young, artsy professional-types who attended this presentation. What we loved the most about this presentation was the atmosphere that was created to accentuate the tone of the line. At the Pier 59 Studio space, the models walked out onto a brightly lit white backdrop, evoking each of the distinct feelings a synesthete may perceive in colors and shapes. The echoing post-rock trance music vibrated through all of the senses, drawing us into the mystery and elegant edginess of her collection. Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed this collection, and look forward to what is next to come from Katie Gallagher.
