#MusicMonday: vōx

I discovered LA songstress vōx on Pigeons & Planes’ “Best of October” playlist. Among many gems (check out this playlist for real), her intoxicating track “Your Vice,” produced by Dylan Brady, jumped out at me as an enticing lovechild between FKA Twigs and Lykke Li. Read my conversation with vōx, née Sarah Winters, below.

Labeling Men: When and how did you start making music?

vōx: As a child, I would write songs on the piano. My teacher encouraged me to learn how to notate them and helped me turn them into sheet music. That validation of my creativity being worthy of care and follow through was everything to me.

Labeling Men: How did you decide on the name "vōx?”

vōx: I was sitting in a diner in Palm Springs with fellow musician Daedelus after his show, and we were brainstorming names. This was more than two years ago; I had recently become mesmerized with up-and-comers Lorde and Banks. I knew I wanted a similarly strong, one word name. vōx (pronounced wokes) means “voice” in Latin.

Labeling Men: How did you get hooked up with Dylan Brady?

vōx: I heard his newly released album through an article in Pigeons & Planes, and I dug his sound so much that I decided to write to him. He was open enough to give me a chance, which was the best sign to me that we could be great collaborators.

Labeling Men: What inspired "Your Vice?”

vōx: Lady Gaga’s “Applause,” but much darker.

Labeling Men: Who is your favorite visual artist and why?

vōx: Right now I’m very enamored with Michal Pudelka, an incredible photographer originally from Bratislava, as well as Ignasi Monreal, a London-based digital artist who does work that consistently blows my mind.

Labeling Men: What is your favorite song in the world?

vōx: Dylan Brady “OMG."

Labeling Men: Who is your dream collaboration?

vōx: Kendrick Lamar.

Labeling Men: What music is on current rotation for you right now?

vōx: Royce Wood Junior, Ryan Hemsworth, Little Simz, TaEast, Kyan.

Labeling Men: Best live show you've attended?

vōx: Young Fathers. Every time is like the first time with them.

Labeling Men: What inspires you?

vōx: Passion. Fearlessness.

Labeling Men: What are you working on right now?

vōx: A few musical and visual collaborations are in the works, as well as a live show.
