EYHO NY: Louie and Chan
After celebrating the Chinese New Year in style and learning all about Louie and Chan, we had to go back on a Tuesday for "Prohibition Night." Having not experienced Louie's portion of the restaurant, we were graciously greeted by owner David Weisner, full top hat in hand and staff dressed to the nines. Wooden benches, hardwood floors, and the dimly lit room transported you into an authentic rustic Italian restaurante. We would recommend the "Cacio de Pepe," which is Gemelli noodles with black pepper and parmesan cheese. While it might sound boring, this dish had one of us exclaiming, "Well, we are at a restaurant and we really shouldn't lick the bowl but..." A complement to that dish would be their pizza with Pecorino, Mushrooms, Kale, and Italian Extra Virgin Olive Oil, tasty and not too filling. Being in a joyous mood, we chatted up Weisner, who told us that he had quite the special drink downstairs - so off we went downstairs to experience Chan's Parlour in all its glory. The 35 cent cocktail of the night was called "The Gatekeeper," which had vodka, melon puree, mint, cucumber, simple syrup, and a splash of soda. As we walked downstairs, the line for the bar was wall to wall, everyone frenetically attempting to grab one last cocktail before the happy hour was over. After the frenzy died down, the patrons relaxed and danced the night away to Chan's Parlour weekly staple "The New Wonders." The premier five piece band lead by cornetist Mike Davis, who are inspired themselves by 1920s' records, had the theme down to a T. Their standout track of the night was "Alice Blue," which we found out later was simply about a dress. Shimmying our way back to one of the seating areas, we interacted with a few regulars who enjoy "the throwback feeling of a 1920s' joint." Trust us, you won't even have to leave the building to enjoy a full night of food, liquor, and jazz.
